Summer Study Abroad Nuts & Bolts

Scholarships & Financial Planning
Holt Summer Study Abroad Scholarship
The merit-based Holt Summer Study Abroad Scholarship awards approximately $2,000 per participant who is studying on certain summer study abroad programs. Additional details and application are available online. The application deadline is typically the same date in February as the summer study abroad deadline. For Summer 2026, the application deadline is February 16, 2026.
Financial Aid
Some undergraduates who study abroad during the summer may be eligible for financial aid, including Direct Loans. Using these loans in the summer will reduce a student’s Direct Loan eligibility for the following academic year. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for details.
Gilman Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship offers study abroad funding for U.S. citizens receiving a Federal Pell Grant. More information is available on the Office of Fellowships and Scholars website.
Weinstein Summer Grants for Athletes
Student athletes who participate in UR’s summer study abroad program are eligible to apply for funding to provide support toward travel costs if accepted to a UR summer study abroad program. The application and other information can be found here. The deadline for application is February 16.
Program Cost Sheets
Program Cost Sheets for each program will be available on each program webpage and brochure page. These downloadable documents allow students and their families to estimate the total cost of attendance and more clearly determine which fees are paid to the University and which expenses will be personal expenses.
Contact with Faculty
The faculty leader for each program is an important contact as you determine which program is your best option. They will review your application and determine approval to participate. Each program description features further details and contact information.
Typical Summer Study Abroad Timeline
Use this timeline to help guide you through the process:
- Application cycle opens on December 1
- Applications due February 16
- Decision notification on February 23
- Non-refundable deposit ($400) and commitment due March 2
- First payments due March 16
- Final payments due April 13
Pre-Departure Information
Several orientation sessions will take place once you have been accepted to a summer study abroad program. These will be held in the spring semester prior to departure for the program. We will also offer an information session for parents and family members of admitted students.
The summer study abroad handbook is a guide for students who have been accepted to study abroad. It helps students prepare for their time abroad and includes information on health and safety, what to do in case of emergency, travel information, withdrawal policy, and other important program-related matters. Students will have access to this handbook once they have committed to the program.
