Meet the Global Fellow:

Anup Kaphle

Anup Kaphle is the Editor-in-Chief of Rest of World, a National Magazine Award–winning publication that reports on the impact of technology beyond the Western world. Since launching the nonprofit media organization in 2020, he has built and led a globally distributed newsroom that has published more than 1,000 stories from over 100 countries, with a mission to elevate local voices and reframe global tech narratives.

Prior to Rest of World, Kaphle spent more than a decade managing and editing international coverage across three continents. He served as Editor-in-Chief of The Kathmandu Post, Nepal’s largest English-language daily, and held senior editorial roles at The Washington Post, where he oversaw online coverage of major global events, including the 2012 Arab Spring and the war against ISIS. He later joined BuzzFeed News as Deputy World Editor, managing international correspondents and global news coverage. Kaphle also served as Executive Editor of Roads & Kingdoms, a James Beard Award–winning digital magazine focused on food, travel, and international reporting.

As a reporter, Kaphle covered the war in Afghanistan, the Maoist insurgency in Nepal, and later returned to report on the 2015 Nepal earthquake. His work has appeared in Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, Columbia Journalism Review and TIME among others. His career blends frontline reporting with editorial leadership, newsroom development, journalism training, and frequent public speaking on international media and press freedom.

Born in Pokhara, Nepal, he holds a Master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree from Tusculum University. He is a Poynter Media Transformation Challenge Fellow and a recipient of the Eugene Meyer Award from The Washington Post. He is on the board of Kantipur Media Group in Nepal, and has served on the boards of the Overseas Press Club of America and the Columbia Journalism School Alumni Association.
