RIO DE JANEIRO: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
May 18–June 20, 2026 (five weeks)
Breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and intensive Portuguese language study in The Marvelous City. Join us in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for a full-immersion summer Portuguese language program. Addressing the needs of students who would like to fulfill their Second Language Proficiency abroad, this program takes your learning experience to the epicenter of Brazilian culture, beautiful Rio de Janeiro. Participants will be able to apply their language skills in real life situations as we explore historically significant towns in the interior of Brazil, study the significance of the world’s largest urban rainforest that is the Tijuca National Park, visit iconic sites renowned the world over, and engage with the dynamic culture of Brazil.
All participants will have the opportunity to study Portuguese with Professor Dixon Abreu at The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (a UR partner institution in Brazil), participate in local cultural events, as well as explore the city and surrounding areas.

Academics
PORT 221 (COM2/Second Language Proficiency)
2 units
Intensive Intermediate Portuguese; fulfills General Education Requirement COM2/Second Language Proficiency (PORT 111 is a pre-requisite, offered in the Spring 2026 semester). All students will register for 2 units of credit.

Cost & Program Information
Cost: $6,300
Costs are approximate, do not include airfare, and are subject to change without notice as a result of fluctuations in currency values and other factors. Participants are responsible for arranging and purchasing their own transportation to and from the program site. Airfare and airport transfer costs are not included in the program fee.
- Scholarship Assistance: UR students are eligible to apply for the Holt Summer Study Abroad Scholarship. Selected recipients will receive approximately $2,000 toward the cost of an approved UR Summer Study Abroad program.
- Financial Aid: Students who anticipate needing additional financial aid should view the Nuts and Bolts section of this website and make contact with the Office of Financial Aid with questions.
- Student Athletes: You are eligible to apply for a Weinstein Grant to provide reimbursement toward the cost of airfare. The application deadline is February 16. More information and the application can be found here.

Orientation
During orientation in the late spring, participants will meet the group, receive important logistical and cultural information, and begin to prepare for their exploration of Brazil and its people. Attendance at all orientation meetings during the spring semester is mandatory.
Housing and Meals
Participants will live with carefully selected families and will include breakfast and lunch or dinner. Those meals that are not included in the program costs may be purchased for reasonable prices at the university cafeteria, or in other restaurants located nearby.

- Walking tour of the city and visit to the Botanical Gardens and other iconic sites
- Weekend travel to the historic city of Tiradentes
