Note: Depart US on Monday, May 11 to arrive in Japan and begin the program on May 12.
Students combine intensive language study along with literature and independent study work while they discover the Japanese language in its authentic setting. Students experience Japan's rich culture through a “homestay” with a Japanese family, by visiting famous sites, and participating in such cultural traditions as the tea ceremony, calligraphy, and Gagaku or traditional Japanese court music. The program will feature excursions to Nara and Kyoto.

Costs are approximate, do not include airfare, and are subject to change without notice as a result of fluctuations in currency values and other factors. Participants are responsible for arranging and purchasing their own transportation to and from the program site. Airfare and airport transfer costs are not included in the program fee.
Scholarship Assistance: UR students are eligible to apply for the Holt Summer Study Abroad Scholarship. Selected recipients will receive approximately $2,000 toward the cost of an approved UR Summer Study Abroad program.

Orientation
During orientation in the late spring, participants will meet the group, receive important logistical and cultural information, and begin to prepare for their exploration of Japan and its people. Attendance at all orientation meetings during the spring semester is mandatory.
Housing and Meals
In Hokkaido, students will stay in a local hotel. Students will live with select host families in Kosai City. While in Kosai City, your host family will also provide your breakfast and dinner. Meals that are not included in the program cost may be purchased for reasonable prices in restaurants located nearby.
